To further strengthen SMU’s commitment to research excellence, professorships are vital in building talent in our faculty by honouring outstanding individuals and rewarding scholarly achievement. Donor support for professorships greatly enriches the resources available to our faculty, fostering exceptional opportunities for both teaching and research.
The OUB Professorial Chair
The OUB Professorial Chair is supported by a generous donation from the Overseas Union Bank (OUB) in conjunction with its 50th anniversary celebrations in 5 February 1999. In 2002, OUB merged into the United Overseas Bank (UOB) and UOB has kindly agreed to retain the name of the professorship.
The Cheng Tsang Man Professorship in Accountancy
In March 2000, just two months after SMU’s establishment, Mr Primus Cheng, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Prima Ltd, made an endowed gift of $1.5 million to SMU to establish the Cheng Tsang Man Professorship in Accountancy in honour of his father, the Honorary Life President and Founder of Prima Ltd.
Tommie Goh Professorship in Entrepreneurship and Business
The Tommie Goh Professorship in Entrepreneurship and Business was established in March 2000 with a $2 million gift by Mr Tommie Goh, Chairman and CEO of 2G Capital, to encourage entrepreneurship in the new economy.
The Celia Moh Professorship
The Celia Moh Professorial Chair was established at SMU in April 2000 with a generous gift of $2 million by the late Mr Laurence Moh, former Chairman, Plantation Timber Products, in honour of his wife, Celia Moh, on the occasion of their 40th anniversary.
MPA Professorship in Maritime Business Economics
In July 2003, under the Maritime Cluster Fund (MCF), the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) donated $4 million to establish the MPA Professorship in Maritime Business Economics.
Yong Pung How Professorship in Law
The Yong Pung How Professorship of Law was established in 2007 and was made possible by a generous $3 million endowed contribution by the Yong Shook Lin Trust. The late Mr Yong Shook Lin, who was himself a prominent lawyer, was the father of former Chief Justice Mr Yong Pung How.
Ho Bee Professorship in Chinese Economy & Business
On 28 January 2008, Ho Bee Group donated $3 million to establish the endowed Ho Bee Professorship in Chinese Economy and Business, SMU's first professorial chair to with the aim of advancing education and research in the area of Chinese entrepreneurship and business.
Wilmar International Professorship in Commodity Business
The Wilmar International Professorship in Commodity Business was established in September 2009 by Wilmar International with a term gift of $225,000.
Keppel Professorship in Financial Economics
In October 2011, the Keppel Professorship in Financial Economics was established in appreciation of Keppel’s $3 million contribution to Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics in 2008.
Jones Day Professorship of Commercial Law
The global law firm Jones Day, through its non-profit foundation funded by donations from attorneys and staff, donated US$500,000 in September 2012 to SMU to establish the Jones Day Professorship of Commercial Law for a term of seven years. The Professorship aims to facilitate increased focus on the development of Commercial Law in Singapore.
