1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE We are proud that our schools, students and faculty continue to be active participants on local and global stages — taking part in competitions, conferences and exchanges that display talent, ambition and the desire to engage. Our centres, labs and institutes continue to engage in research and discovery, making meaningful impact around digital transformation and sustainable living as we set our sights on strengthening our society and industries — and those beyond our borders. As we strive towards our goal of creating meaningful impact, we have embraced more holistic support from partners and donors both old and new. The collaboration that we see today is becoming more comprehensive — extending beyond the more conventional student financial aid and touching on new multi-faceted aspects of our growth. We also celebrate the reinvigoration of past gifts — as donors from different backgrounds rally behind established opportunities of support that we’ve proven to be effective and empowering. The tremendous generosity of our partners and donors does more than facilitate our actions — you inspire us to reach for greater aspirations, and you create possibilities that positively impact our students, our research and the communities — professional, business and social — around us. OPTIMISM AND A FUTURE THAT’S OURS TO CREATE. 2021 has been a year of drive and collective accomplishment — as an institution, we are taking new conversations, innovation and opportunities forward. Over the years our ambitions and impact have grown, and we are deeply aware that these endeavours are shaped and supported by our partners and donors. You create these possibilities for us to collectively explore, build meaningful experiences for our students, and strengthen our communities. PROFESSOR LILY KONG PRESIDENT AND LEE KONG CHIAN CHAIR PROFESSOR OF SOCIAL SCIENCES, SMU

SPOTLIGHTING FINANCIAL AID AT SMU Financial Aid is a key focus area at SMU as we strive to ensure all students are able to access a transformative education, regardless of their financial need. By doing so, we hope that students can unlock their full potential and leverage the opportunities an education at SMU provides to further discover their passions outside of the classroom. Since SMU’s inception, we have continued to build a range of initiatives and programmes that ensures financial aid remains at the core of our educational offering. Laying a strong foundation in this aspect is our SMU Access programme. BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION OF GIVING WITH FINANCIAL AID FEATURE STORY SMU has established a range of pivotal gifts and initiatives that to date, continue to deliver meaningful support and impact. Many of these gifts and initiatives have stood the test of time because the value that they bring resonates with other partners and donors. Over the years, these initiatives have grown through the generosity of like-minded donors and inspire others to step up.

5 Through this programme, we guarantee eligible students a financial aid package to cover their full tuition fees. SMU Access was first established in 2017 and seed-funded by the Quantedge Foundation Scholarship, thanks to an endowed $8 million contribution by the Quantedge Foundation. Since its inception, 100 students have been supported by the Quantedge Foundation Scholarship, and this number will only continue to grow. SMU ACCESS — A FIRST OF ITS KIND BY A SINGAPORE UNIVERSITY WE ARE HAPPY TO PARTNER AND SUPPORT SMU IN ITS MISSION TO GUARANTEE FINANCIAL AID TO SINGAPOREAN STUDENTS FROM ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS. AS SINGAPORE PROGRESSES, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR SOCIETY TO CONTINUE PROVIDING EQUAL ACCESS TO QUALITY HIGHER EDUCATION FOR EVERYONE. GIVING THESE STUDENTS BLANKET ASSURANCE OF FULL FINANCIAL AID CAN GO A LONG WAY TOWARDS THIS END. THIS WILL CERTAINLY LIGHTEN THE BURDEN ON THEIR FAMILIES, IMPROVE EDUCATION OUTCOMES AND ENHANCE SOCIAL MOBILITY. SUHAIMI ZAINUL-ABIDIN BOARD MEMBER, QUANTEDGE FOUNDATION SMU ACCESS IS FOUNDED ON THE BELIEF THAT NO DESERVING STUDENT SHOULD BE DENIED AN SMU EDUCATION DUE TO FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES. We continue to expand the SMU Access programme and work with partners who believe in the cause the programme represents. In 2021, a gift from a senior leader in the financial industry who wished to remain anonymous helped to establish the SMU Access Endowment Bursary. Through the additional support, the donor hopes that recipients will feel motivated to achieve greater heights of academic and practical excellence, and that in future, these recipients will be inspired to pay it forward and help others once they are able to.

GROWING OUR SUPPORT THROUGH EXISTING FINANCIAL AID PROGRAMMES Beyond SMU Access, we also continue to work with partners to build and further strengthen other financial aid programmes that provide assistance to our students. By expanding on existing gifts, programmes and initiatives, we ensure continued momentum to allow for more sustained support of those benefitting. New gifts that strengthen our financial aid support offering: OCTAVA FOUNDATION STUDY AWARD Originally established in 2017, the gift continues to grow and support more students thanks to additional funding by the Octava Foundation to enhance the study award. Each study award is valued at $6,000 and tenable for up to 3 years of study. WE ARE ALWAYS IMPRESSED BY HOW THE STUDENTS PRESENT THEMSELVES AND THE MEANINGFUL CONTRIBUTIONS THEY MAKE THROUGH THEIR INTERACTIONS WITH OUR FELLOW STUDY AWARD RECIPIENTS AND IN THE COMMUNITY. 7 YONG PUNG HOW BURSARY First established in 2013 and 2016 respectively, the Yong Pung How Bursary in Law and the Yong Pung How Bursary provides support to undergraduate students across all 6 schools within SMU. The endowed bursary is used to subsidise tuition fees of eligible students so that they can focus on their education. In 2021, the impact of the bursaries was further extended with an additional gift from the family of the late Dr Yong Pung How, to increase the value of each award. Close to 100 students have been supported since its inception. SUSTAINED AND SUSTAINABLE VALUE Whether these gifts naturally evolved from groups with communal interests and experience, or whether they represent aspirations that cut across individuals and organisations, they reflect a growing base that ensures SMU has a stable foundation to develop and make a difference. RAJAN SUNSHINE BURSARY AND SHAILA SUNSHINE BURSARY Driven by a passion and desire to help those less fortunate, husband and wife, Jain Rajan and Jain Shaila, actively support a variety of causes. In 2021, both contributed gifts to establish the Rajan Sunshine Bursary and Shaila Sunshine Bursary to support up to 16 students in total, for the full four years of their education. Their hope is that recipients will take the initiative to similarly pay it forward, and beam a ray of light on those less fortunate. RSTN CONSULTING BURSARY Based on his own experience of financial hardship while growing up, Mr Steven Lim, Group CEO and Founder of RSTN Consulting, established the new bursary to help students facing similar financial challenges, and hopefully, inspire them to pay it forward in future when they are able to. Starting in academic year 2021/2022, the gift will support 12 students per year, at $8,000 annually, over the next 10 years. I WOULD LIKE TO EXPRESS MY GREATEST APPRECIATION FOR THIS AWARD. Giving Review 2021 / Inspire New Leaders 10 The Linklaters Scholarship was established at SMU in 2021 through a generous endowed gift from the multinational law firm with an established 25-year presence in Singapore. Valued at $15,000 a year, the scholarship is tenable for up to four years and will help cover the recipient’s annual tuition fee and other study-related expenses. For Linklaters LLP, constant growth and innovation lies at the heart of everything they do. As such, in addition to providing financial support for deserving full-time law undergraduates studying at SMU, scholarship recipients will be invited to meet and learn alongside mentors from the firm. They will also have access to valuable training opportunities during their 4-year journey as a Linklaters Scholar. This will undoubtedly provide them with valuable exposure and workplace experience. The firm has also partnered with SMU to establish the Linklaters Bursary Fund to provide support for SMU law students facing financial hardships during their studies. This could be in the form of bursaries, emergency relief, study awards, textbook grants and all other necessary grants to help alleviate financial constraints faced by students. Having come from a modest background, Mr Steve Tay has long attributed his achievements to the kindness and financial support he received during his education. Anchored in his strong belief that education is the best leveler in society, Mr Tay had previously established the Steve Tay Scholarship and the Steve Tay Bursary in 2019 to provide support for undergraduate students at SMU. In 2021, Mr Tay made a new gift to SMU to establish the Steve Tay Endowed Scholarship. Commencing in Academic Year 2022/23, the scholarship will be available to fulltime Singaporean undergraduates at SMU in any degree programme who demonstrate good academic results. Mr Tay hopes that the scholarship will help financially challenged students to gain back their focus, to excel in their studies and build a bright future for themselves. INSTILLING A WORLD-CLASS MINDSET IN LAW STUDENTS LEVELLING THE PLAYING FIELD THROUGH ACCESS TO EDUCATION Empowering Students Empowering Students OUR HOPE IS THAT THE OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE THROUGH LINKLATERS WILL NOT ONLY HELP LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD FOR STUDENTS WHO MAY BE IN FINANCIAL NEED, BUT ALSO PROVIDE THEM WITH ADDITIONAL PATHWAYS FOR GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT. AS NEW TRENDS AND TECHNOLOGIES EMERGE, ACCESS TO MENTORS FROM THE FIRM WILL ALLOW OUR SCHOLARS TO LEARN FROM SEASONED PROFESSIONALS INVOLVED IN SOME OF THE MOST COMPLEX AND INNOVATIVE PROJECTS ACROSS THE REGION. Giving Review 2021 / Create New Knowledge 14 Sustainable Living has been identified as one of the three priorities that SMU has chosen to focus on as part of its Vision 2025. Specifically, one of the challenges that the University is actively working on, is the area of food security and how talent development, knowledge creation and community outreach can create a lasting difference. Starting with a 2018 research report on food insecurity in Singapore, SMU’s Lien Centre for Social Innovation was subsequently commissioned by the Food Bank Singapore to conduct a national study on food insecurity in Singapore which led to the publication of the Hunger Report in 2020. Research conducted in 2019 found that while Singapore was ranked at the top of the 2019 Global Food Security Index, 10.4% of Singaporean households surveyed experienced food insecurity. Building on the insights from the Hunger Report 2019, the Food Bank Singapore provided a second round of funding in 2021, to conduct a study that would further investigate how the food needs and circumstances of food insecure families have changed during the pandemic. Beyond ascertaining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on these families, the team will also develop a ‘needs’ toolkit to help determine the current food needs of the families. The project will also connect the families facing food insecurity with relevant food support organisations to ensure they receive the appropriate support. The report is expected to be published in 2022. The research project is the first-of- its-kind and represents a way in which SMU is leveraging its strengths in research and our pool of experts to contribute to the pursuit of sustainable living. UNCOVERING THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON FOOD SECURITY AND DEVELOPING NEW SOLUTIONS The report is the first nationally representative study on food insecurity in Singapore that aims to document the extent, severity, causes and consequences of food insecurity in the country. SMU’S LIEN CENTRE FOR SOCIAL INNOVATION HAS LONG BEEN AN ADVOCATE OF SEEDING POSITIVE SOCIAL CHANGE IN SINGAPORE AND BEYOND, THROUGH THOUGHT LEADERSHIP AND BY FACILITATING PARTNERSHIPS THAT DRIVE INNOVATION. Giving Review 2021 / Strengthen Our Community 21 Run by the SMU Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (IIE), the biennial Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition (LKYGBPC) has evolved over the years to become a premier university innovation challenge that attracts entries from top university teams around the globe. The competition itself is only possible with the long-standing support of our founding partner, Wilmar International Limited, alongside our global partners. The 10th LKYGBPC focused on the theme: Reimagine Smart, Sustainable and Resilient Cities, and received over 850 submissions from 650 universities across the globe. This was a 58% increase in total submissions against the previous edition in 2017. After several rounds, Iterative Scopes, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Relectrify, from the University of Melbourne, were crowned the Grand Winners. Iterative Scopes developed artificial intelligence (AI)-based detection and diagnostic tools for gastrointestinal physicians to improve patient’s outcome; while Relectrify developed a scalable technology solution that unlocks the capacity in used electric vehicle batteries for affordable energy storage. New programmes were also launched during the latest edition, including the inaugural Venture Capitalist (VC) Office Hours, powered by Protégé Ventures, which resulted in a total of 124 successful business consultations between early-stage start-ups and our panel of senior investors from around the region. Another new programme was a series of panel discussions titled, Changemakers Conversations, which allowed discussion and sharing within the Innovation & Enterprise (I&E) community. Giving Review 2021 / Strengthen Our Community 22 Impacting Communities SMU EYE INVESTMENT CLUB SCHOLARSHIP In appreciation of the impact and opportunities that an SMU education has provided, the members of SMU’s largest student interest club have come together to establish a new scholarship programme. The SMU EYE Investment Club Scholarship provides financial assistance to one SMU undergraduate annually. Founded in 2002, the EYE Investment Club is SMU’s first investment interactive club and is committed to connecting its members to the various players in the finance sector. Comprising over 1,600 members with an alumni network spanning 18 years, the club facilitates the exchange of ideas and knowledge between students, faculty, alumni, and industry professionals to empower individual learners while shaping the sector. In addition to financial support, recipients will also benefit from mentorship and guidance by SMU EYE Club alumni. The scholarship is also available to students from any degree programme, which reflects the spirit of the club as it seeks to enable anyone and everyone who is interested to learn regardless of their background. ESTABLISHING SMU’S ALUMNI PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL As we continue to gain new opportunities through the gifts, support and partnership of our alumni, we are also creating more structured platforms for our alumni to collaborate with us. Commenced in January 2021, SMU’s Alumni Philanthropy Council is chaired by SMU alumnus Ben Toh (BAcc, 2009) and comprises 7 alumni volunteers. This council actively works with the University to raise funds in support of SMU’s giving pillars. In particular, they advise on and assist with the development and cultivation of mutually supportive fundraising partnerships with alumni groups, community groups, and organisations to help raise awareness of the philanthropic opportunities at SMU. Celebrating a Culture of Alumni Giving The SMU alumni community is characterised by the desire and capacity to make a meaningful difference and to give back — to communities, industry, the University and those that seek an education within. This unique culture is a source of significant pride and promise. We celebrate the gifts and ambitions of our alumni as they unite to strengthen the SMU community and beyond. IT IS WITH A GRATEFUL HEART THAT I VOLUNTEERED TO LEAD THE ALUMNI PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL, A GROUP OF LIKEMINDED ALUMNI WHO WANT TO HELP FINANCIALLYCHALLENGED JUNIORS PERSIST IN THEIR EDUCATION. WE ENCOURAGE ALUMS TO STEP FORWARD AND JOIN US IN THIS MEANINGFUL MISSION. BEN TOH, BACC (2009) CHAIRMAN, ALUMNI PHILANTHROPY COUNCIL Empowering Students

Giving Review 2021 / Strengthen Our Community 23 Impacting Communities In recognition of the holistic education that their family received at SMU, Mr Koh Lian Chye and Mdm Chew Ee Leng made an endowed gift of $250,000 to establish the Chew Kim Yong Endowed Bursary. Their children Mr Lewis Koh Ren Yi (BBM, 2009) and Ms Celine Koh Zhi Ying (BSocSc, 2010), as well as their son-in-law, Mr Tan Da Qing Steven (BBM, 2008) are all alumni of SMU. The bursary is named in honour of Mdm Chew’s late father, who came from China in his teens and was unable to pursue higher education due to limited family finances. Through the gift, Mdm Chew fulfilled his wish to help students with limited financial means access a quality education. The Chew Kim Yong Endowed Bursary is available for eligible undergraduate students, and is valued at $10,000 which can be used to cover tuition fees and other study-related expenses. GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AS A FAMILY WE STRONGLY BELIEVE IN THE POWER OF EDUCATION — TO CHANGE LIVES AND TO MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE... WITH THIS GIFT FOR THE BURSARY, WE HOPE TO PAY IT FORWARD, SO THAT STUDENTS FROM LESS PRIVILEGED BACKGROUNDS MAY HAVE ACCESS TO A GOOD EDUCATION, IN THE SAME WAY OUR CHILDREN DID AT SMU. MR KOH LIAN CHYE AND MDM CHEW EE LENG DONORS SMU’s journey of inspiring community service and social responsibility began at the University’s inception. In the course of 20 years, SMU students have clocked almost 3 million hours of community service and have left their mark internationally through 135 overseas projects. Importantly, the difference they have made often leaves its mark on communities, with over 80% of projects lasting at least three years. Through a grant of $890,000, the Tote Board Social Capital Initiative: SMU Inspiring Community Service Programme has been established at SMU to strengthen capabilities and build new opportunities to inspire, enact, celebrate and measure meaningful community service programmes for our students. SMU is working with Tote Board to support four key areas of impact that will strengthen community service programmes — this includes equipping student leaders with the right skills; ensuring community service opportunities through direct projects and internships; raising awareness through a range of platforms; and finally evaluating the impact of community service projects. The partnership represents a unique and comprehensive approach, which will begin with equipping 100 students and supporting at least eight projects, but has the potential to make a meaningful difference to an entire generation of future leaders and the communities they serve. While the COVID-19 pandemic has kept us apart physically, our milestone fundraiser, SMOO Challenge, provided a unique opportunity to rally people together behind a shared purpose, and to advance our cause of supporting students most in need of support. Conducted virtually, the run-based challenge was open to SMU students, staff, faculty, alumni and our partners anywhere in the world. Funds were raised through participation, open donation, and a unique distance-based mechanism which unlocked gifts from partners upon the completion of key distance milestones. SMOO CHALLENGE: UNITING OUR COMMUNITY FOR GOOD FEATURE STORY DISTANCE MILESTONE TO UNLOCK GIFTS SMOO CHALLENGE 2021 IN NUMBERS: >63,000KM total distance by participants — more than the circumference of Earth 1,000KM distance clocked by the top performing individual over 21 days 1,168 participants >$667,000 gross proceeds were raised to support bursaries Thanks to the collective effort of more than 1,000 participants, the SMOO Challenge unlocked all donation milestones. Tote Board also provided dollar-for-dollar matching donations that helped double the total funds raised for the challenge which will go towards the SMU Bursary Fund to ensure all students are able to access an education.
