University is a great platform and the last chance for us to explore our interests. When I entered SMU, one of the first things I did was to join different co-curricular activities (CCAs) the campus had to offer. CCAs open opportunities to learn practical skills and connect with seniors who have experience in various relevant industries.

In my first semester this year, I was a subcommittee member in a student-led investment club, EYE Investment, where I learned how to value a financial stock and picked up financial modelling skills. I also joined a student initiative that produces business research on emerging countries called SMU Emerging Markets (SEM). The experience of conducting research and writing executive briefs enhanced my learning outside the classroom. During my semester break, I was able to put what I learned from my CCAs to good use, coming in second in a business challenge with my team. The tutelage and mentorship I received spurred me to be an executive committee member in SEM to give back and equip other SMU students with the relevant analytical and research skills.

As a way to give back to the community, I also signed up as part of the organising committee of Project Moolah, which teaches secondary school students financial literacy. I realised I had to practise what I preached too to pick up ideal spending and saving habits.

Staying at home during COVID-19 is not going to stop me from learning. My classes on Python and coding is already underway or coming up. There are papers to read, briefs to write and business challenges to prepare for this summer.

None of this would have happened if not for the SMU School of Accountancy Aspiration Scholarship I received. The scholarship has taken financial burden off my family. It has made me confident to step out of my comfort zone to try new things or do things I never thought I’d do. I honestly can’t wait to explore the opportunities next year will bring.
