Goh Shun Min, UOB-SMU MSA Data Analytics Scholarship Recipient
For the finance and accounting profession, big data is giving rise to new forms of business value and enterprise risk. As technology advances, the shift in accounting technology requires new accountants to have stronger analytical skills and take on an advisory role to bring value and help shape business strategies. Having been in this industry for 9 years, I decided to take time off my career to focus on personal development and upskill myself to remain competitive in the accounting job market.
I enrolled in SMU’s MSc in Accounting (Data & Analytics) programme as it dives deep into the application of data technology in the accounting domain. I was convinced by the idea of being able to leverage on my professional skillsets whilst exploring avenues on how to develop them in this increasingly technological world. The programme has been rewarding as it introduced new elements and technical skills in the finance world that I was not previously exposed to. The distinctive seminar-style learning encourages interaction among peers, coupled with the varied backgrounds of the students allowed me to learn from and guide others, making peer learning rewarding.
Since receiving the scholarship, I also took part in a case competition where my team represented SMU in Sydney, Australia. Watching competing teams from non-native English-speaking countries present ideas effectively and concisely really opened my eyes. The competition taught me about collaboration and cooperation as a team under guidance of seasoned SMU professors and mentors.
I am truly honored and grateful to be one of the recipients of the UOB-SMU MSA Data Analytics Scholarship. The thought of being able to apply new skillsets in UOB Data Management Office upon graduation and being in the forefront of this technological change excites me to do well academically and to equip myself with the relevant skills and knowledge for my new role in this mid-career change. Receiving the financial aid has provided timely assurance during this time of difficulty with the current COVID-19 situation.
Apart from learning new skills and knowledge in this postgraduate programme, it is also about meeting people and building relationships. With less to worry about, I was able to spend more time for others and myself. As the President of the Class Committee, together with my team we have organised several physical and virtual social activities to bring the cohort closer. The Professional Development Series workshops that the Postgraduate Professional Programmes Office organises have also expanded my horizons too.
