Lim Xin Yi, Prudential Bursary Recipient
Growing up, I have always looked up to my mother. She believes that all women are empowered to pursue anything that they aspire to be. Ever since I was young, I was inspired to be just like her. That was why I decided to pursue Economics at SMU. I love listening to lectures, picking up new skills and learning the Korean language.
Outside of class, I love running and being in nature, as a space to refresh my mind and finding my balance. I am also fond of photography and participated in a photography club prior to joining SMU. Being hearing impaired, I feel that SMU has made me feel welcomed and inclusive – both financially and physically.
I was extremely thankful for being awarded the Prudential Bursary. Not only it had a positive impact on my personal and student life, but I was also able to purchase a new hearing aid after ten years which can be an expensive commodity. The bursary also came in at a time when my mother went through a serious accident that left our family financially unstable. Even though our living and family’s financial situation changed after the accident, I pushed myself forward and motivated to do well.
With the Prudential Bursary, I was also given an internship opportunity where I was able to learn more about the insurance sector. Not only has it open up my mind about the corporate world but it has also expanded both my writing and communication skills. I feel valued as a part of their team. The bursary was crucial at the moment during my student life and gave me hope. Graduating soon, I hope to be able to give back to SMU.
