Alumni Community Continues Support to Alma Mater During Challenging Times
Launched in January 2018, the SMU Alumni Community Fund creates opportunities for alumni to come together and collectively support SMU’s vision foster stronger bonds amongst fellow alumni and support the less privileged student community. The fund started out with a goal to support bursaries for needy students, joint community service projects by students and alumni, and the SMU Mentoring Programme.
In view of the current economic situation, efforts have been directed to focus on helping students in need, with more than 20 bursaries to be disbursed in the new academic year. To date, over 180 alumni have contributed close to $460,000 to support bursaries for financially challenged students during these unprecedented times.
PLincoln Law (BSc(IS)) is a year 1 student who received the Alumni Community Fund Bursary, which really lessened the financial burden that his family was facing. Moved by the support he received, he is more confident now in pursuing his aspirations to inspire the younger generation in picking up coding. “I will do my best to make sure that the donors’ effort will not go to waste,” Lincoln pledged. Another year 1 BBM student, Tan Zhen Hang, who received the bursary in his first year, now worries less about finding work while pursuing his studies. “I hope that SMU alumni can continue to support students like me in the future,” he said.
