The Ngee Ann Kongsi Supports SMU’s Centre For Research On Successful Ageing (ROSA)

Sealing a partnership to promote research on elderly well-being are Mr Richard Lee [2nd from left], Vice President and Chairman of the Donation & Charity Sub- Committee, The Ngee Ann Kongsi and SMU President Professor Lily Kong [2nd from right]. Joining them are Mr Jamie Teo, President of The Ngee Ann Kongsi and Professor Paulin Straughan, Director of ROSA.

In 2020, The Ngee Ann Kongsi formalised its intention to support research on elderly well-being and successful ageing in Singapore. This intended funding support will go towards the growth and expansion of SMU’s Centre for Research on Successful Ageing (ROSA).

This amount will be the largest research funding that SMU is receiving from a non-government organisation. It is also a significant milestone for The Ngee Ann Kongsi as it will be its largest donation towards research to date.

The partnership will enable ROSA to increase its outreach efforts to share the Centre’s findings with targeted groups, including policymakers, academia, non-profit organisations, and non-government organisations. It will also further strengthen the translation of research insights into policy innovations that advance the holistic well-being of older adults in Singapore.

In 2014, SMU’s Vision 2025 was unveiled: to be a world-renowned global city university in Asia that excels in tackling the world’s complexities, impacting humanity positively, and producing leaders of tomorrow through its transformative education and multi-disciplinary research.

To achieve this vision, the University selected three priorities to guide our efforts on areas of particular economic and social relevance to our region, with Sustainable Living being one of them. Given increasing longevity and a low fertility rate, Singapore is one of the fastest ageing populations in the world.

Therefore, the generosity of The Ngee Ann Kongsi towards initiatives such as ROSA will allow us to focus on becoming a thought leader and solution partner in contributing to sustainable city living, enhancing quality of life, and shaping the legal, regulatory, and financing frameworks to build healthier and happier societies within the region.
