Providing Timely Support to Undergraduates
Mr Lim served as Chairman of the Land Transport Authority of Singapore for 14 years, Chairman of the Singapore Accountancy Commission from 1 April 2013 to 31 March 2016, Chairman of the Accounting Standards Council from 1 November 2011 to 31 October 2015, and as Member of the Legal Service Commission from 1 Nov 2007 to 31 Oct 2013. Mr Lim was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Public Service Star, and the Public Service Medal in 2010, 2003 and 1998 respectively.
2020 has been a challenging year, particularly for students struggling financially due to the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognising the urgent need to provide financial relief to these students, Mr Michael Lim, Chairman of Nomura Singapore, stepped forward with a generous term gift to provide twenty bursaries in the upcoming academic year.
Mr Lim is a veteran in the accounting field in Singapore, with a career spanning over 30 years. He is a highly respected leader who retired from his last role in PricewaterhouseCoopers as Executive Chairman in 2003. He has made these bursaries available primarily to students from the School of Accountancy, in the hopes that talented and promising young individuals will be able to pursue higher education in accountancy, regardless of need, and ultimately enable them to choose a career path that is most meaningful to them.
The bursaries are valued at $8,000 each and will help ensure that an undergraduate education at SMU will always be accessible to Singaporean students from the widest possible backgrounds.
