Scholarships that leave a legacy
New scholarships have been established at SMU in memory of three late individuals – Mr Ho See Beng who was former Member of Parliament for Bras Basah constituency and founding father of the labour movement; Mr Lim Hang Hing who had built a lifelong career in the Ministry of Defence spanning 38 years; and Ms Sharon Lee Teng Siew, wife of Mr Kwek Leng Keow. Close to $1 million was contributed by individuals and organisations, including family members and close friends, towards the scholarship fund.
The Ho See Beng Scholarship & Excellence Award, the Lim Hang Hing Scholarship and the Sharon Lee Teng Siew Scholarship recognise outstanding students from the School of Social Sciences who have financial need. The scholars are respectively second year student Goh Si Hui, first year student Toh Xiaoping, and second year student Tim Mou Hui.
“My mother had always been a firm believer in education and that everyone should be entitled to a higher standard of learning, regardless of gender or background. Hence, this fund was established to allow underprivileged students to pursue their dreams, whilst perpetuating the memory of my mother and the values she upheld,” said Ms Michelle Kwek, eldest daughter of the late Ms Sharon Lee.
"The scholarships are especially meaningful because they keep alive the legacy of three Singaporean individuals while contributing towards the cause of education and helping needy students through their university studies. The late Mr Ho See Beng, Mr Lim Hang Hing and Ms Sharon Lee are role models for the younger generation for the values and beliefs they stood for. Graduates of SMU will one day occupy key leadership positions in society. The scholarships present a unique opportunity to bring about awareness of the achievements of these people, continue their long-enduring values and principles, and shape young minds."
