SMU Welcomes Mr Timothy Chia Chee Ming as a new Member of SMU
The family of the late Dr Yong Pung How has generously increased their support towards the Yong Pung How Bursary in Law and the Yong Pung How Bursary with a top up gift of $870,000 to SMU, to provide greater support for financially needy students across the University.
Dr Yong was an ardent believer in legal education, and during his tenure as Chief Justice of Singapore, strongly supported the Government’s plan to set up the law school at SMU. After his retirement, he continued to impact the University as Founding Chairman of the School of Law’s Advisory Board, and later as SMU’s Pro Chancellor and thereafter, Chancellor. In honour of his servitude, SMU decided to name its law school the SMU Yong Pung How School of Law.
During the renaming event on 8 April 2021,
Ms Yong Ying-I,shared a quote from her father:
“Your achievements can give the world new services and give you societal recognition and standing. But your legacy, after you have gone, is what you have done for others, how you have done your part to make the world a better place.”
This gift towards the Yong Pung How Bursaries will support 13 students every year, in perpetuity. Find out more about the bursaries here.
