Excelpoint encourages excellence through Bursary and Resilience Award
-
Thanks to the generosity of Excelpoint Technology Ltd, a leading regional electronics components distributor, financial constraint need not be a barrier to an SMU education. In August 2014, the Excelpoint Bursary was established to provide financial support for needy full-time undergraduates.
Mr Albert Phuay, Chairman of Excelpoint, shared that his parents were unable to let him further his education due to his family’s financial situation. “If I had attended university, my siblings will not have the opportunity to attend even primary or secondary school,” he shared. “I hope the Bursaries we have set up at SMU will offer some form of financial help to the students facing hardships. It is also our way of doing our part for the society.”
Leonard Ong Guang Shan, a fourth year student at the School of Information Systems and a recipient of the Excelpoint Bursary, expressed his gratitude to Excelpoint Technology for the bursary, which would go a long way in lightening the financial load on his family. “This bursary is a huge relief for my family. I can now concentrate more of my energies on my studies and worry less about the study loan. Thank you for supporting me, and I hope to be able to pay in forward in the future and to also support others in their educational journey.” Leonard has been juggling studies and part-time work to support himself for his studies at SMU.
To motivate the recipients to achieve excellence in their studies, the Excelpoint Resilience Award was also established to offer further encouragement to the students. The Award will be given to the Excelpoint Bursary recipient who best demonstrates his/her ability in overcoming financial hardship and has made significant academic progress.
