Loving the SMU experience
SMU couple add endowed scholarships to their earlier gift of exchange scholarships
The full SMU educational experience left a deep and heartfelt impression on alumni Kenny Mah (BSc(Econs), 2007) and Valerie Loh (BAcc, 2007).
Appreciating the impact that the SMU experience had on their lives and work perspectives, both from time spent on campus and overseas exchange programmes, the couple were inspired to enable more students to benefit from the experience.
The KMVCL Scholarship (abbreviated from the names of the family) is available to full-time Singaporean SMU undergraduates. It assists students aspiring to greater heights of excellence, regardless of family circumstances. The Scholarship adds to the couple’s earlier gift of the KMVCL Exchange Scholarship, established as an endowed fund in 2016 to help students in financial need participate in global exposure programmes at SMU.
Kenny and Valerie hope that the recipients of scholarships that they have supported will benefit from the SMU experience that they had as students and be inspired to pay it forward in the future, in their own ways.
Love and gratitude have been the greatest motivators in the couple’s gifts. Their affection for one another commenced while at SMU, and their first gift in 2016 marked their tenth graduation anniversary and a new arrival to the family. The establishment of this second endowed scholarship in 2023 is premised on gratitude for their alma mater and a continuation of a strong belief in giving back to society. By taking the lead, they hope not only to set an example for their own children, but to inspire more Singaporeans to experience the love and appreciation for community giving after receiving support during their education.
What a meaningful way to honour Kenny and Valerie’s SMU experience!
